Gold was used in dentistry and the Egyptians consumed it for mental, bodily, and spiritual purification. They believed that gold could stimulate the chi (life force) and restore youth. For aesthetic purposes - gold leaf adorned the pyramids. In Ancient Rome, gold leaf was used to ornament buildings.

In China; the creation and application of gold leaf has been a traditional art for more than 1,700 years.

Located in the Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan is Kanazawa, also known as the "City of Gold Leaf." Its ideal climate conditions and water quality had made gold leaf manufacturing a viable industry since the sixteenth century and even until today.
